Melted Satin Rose

This has been an exhausting week! Janae and I have been working on her new floors and I have really been getting behind on my normal stuff..like blogging! I am anxious to hopefully visit all I follow tonight and see what you have been up too.

Last night Janae was only needing me to cut pieces once in awhile, so between cuts I was working on making a melted rose. There are so many tutorials out there but I found it to be harder than most of them make it sound. Of course, though I am creative, when I first learn something it seems like it takes me a minute to totally get it:)

I started with some white satin I found at Goodwill. You need to use fabrics with polyester, fabrics that will melt. You can use laces and other fabrics but the lace I had with me at Janae's had to loose of a weave and wasn't working. It was melting up too much. I wanted to make a pink and white rose and I couldn't find the right color of pink so I decided to dye some.

I used the color Petal Pink and I love the color. I will use this color again.

First you cut 6 random circles--they shouldn't be perfect. Then you cut into the center, again no need to be perfect.

Then you work with a candle to melt the edges. At first I was using a pillar candle--I found using a candle jar makes much more heat.  Also you need to hold the fabric above the candle..at first I was trying to hold it off to the side and just work around the edges and that didn't work. Holding it above the flame and working around the edges is what worked for me.

After melting each layer you can lay them together..biggest to smallest and sew them together in the middle. At this point you can add a button or something.

It turned out quite pretty--looking like a rose that has completely opened.

It felt good to do a project. I can imagine now that I could make these for a lot of different projects. You could put them on tote bags, pillows, boxes, gifts, jackets...or a magazine rack that you recently got at Goodwill for $3.99.....:)

Thanks for visiting!

This is something new to me. It certainly does look like a big old fashioned rose with it's curled petals. I can see you making a lot of these to embellish all kinds of pretties!

Thanks for sharing at the Bunny Hop!

  12. Oh Sandy your post just came into my email and I am so excited I can hardly stand it. I have wanted to learn how to make these and your tutorial was fabulous. I was going to purchase one of these beauties from an etsy store and they wanted over $20. Well thanks but no thanks. I do think I can handle this one and can make lots. LOVE 'em. I am truly grateful you took the time to give the tutorial. That really helps.

    Big, big hugs,

  29. I published a book in 2006 with this particular technique and several others that I have developed a number of years before. Just ask if there is anything you want to know. I have not so many guides on the net, but some older work with the flowers on http://www.flickr.com/photos/gammelbro/sets/72157600133098784/ - I will see if I can soon put some DIY on my blog: http://www.gammelbro.blogspot.com/. A Christmas tree light, is ideal to work with ;-)

  30. That is stunning, Sandy! It would make a great addition to a straw hat, too. I justed dressed up a straw hat I had with some black ribbon and a fabric flower. Really changed the look with that little addition. Love the bling you added to the center.

  32. you know i follow over 200 blogs and the only two that are must read for me are yours and your daughters! there is something special to me about you both. i would love to meet someday. i love the rose and never heard of this technique. i can't wait to try it. i just costumed a school play, 'hello dolly' and these would have been gorgeous on the hats and bustles! i used purchased ones and yours are more romantic and remind me of the era (late 1880's) more than dollar store silks!!
    all the best, donna
